Determine Inspection Types and Risk-Based Intervals

The workplace risk assessment is the central tool for determining the type, scope, and deadlines of rack inspections. Depending on the mechanical stress, turnover rate, and hazard potential in the warehouse, different inspection intervals must be defined.

While weekly or risk-based visual inspections may be necessary under high loads to detect acute defects early, an expert inspection must be carried out at least every twelve months based on national and international standards like DIN EN 15635.

Document Inspector Qualification

Recurring inspections of storage equipment must only be carried out by a competent person. This person must have the necessary technical qualifications, professional experience, and up-to-date professional activity in the field of rack inspection.

Systematically Inspect Rack Components and Condition

During the inspection, all relevant components of the rack system are systematically examined for deformation, cracks, and completeness. Special attention is paid to load-bearing elements such as uprights, frames, and beams, as well as their safety locks.

The structural environment, such as the anchoring in the hall floor, the vertical alignment of the racks, and the presence of load capacity signs and intact corner collision protection must also be documented.

Evaluate Damage and Initiate Immediate Actions

Visible damage must be evaluated using standardized criteria (e.g., the green, yellow, and red risk classification system defined in DIN EN 15635). This ensures a standardized approach to safety risks.

If a critical defect is identified, immediate action must be taken. This includes, for example, cordoning off the affected rack bay, unloading the storage level, or marking the area with clear hazard warning signs.

Traceably Document Measures and Re-inspections

Every inspection result must be documented transparently in the protocol. For identified defects, concrete follow-up measures must be defined, responsible persons named, and binding deadlines set.

After successful repair or replacement of damaged components, a documented re-inspection takes place. The release of the rack is noted in the protocol and legally finalized by the signatures of the responsible persons.
