Whole-System Inspection vs. Single Hose Reels: Why a Holistic Approach Matters

When maintaining fire water systems, simply visually inspecting individual hose connections or reels is far from sufficient. A fire main is a complex, safety-critical system. Fire protection in an emergency can only be guaranteed if all components – from the water supply and pressure boosting systems down to the very last outlet – work together flawlessly.

Insufficient supply at a single point compromises the firefighting success of the entire building. Therefore, the testing protocol covers all functionally critical parts of the system to systematically rule out pressure drops or blocked valves.

System Types and Central Components in Focus

Depending on the building's fire safety concept, different system types are used, each requiring specific maintenance steps. Our template covers all common configurations.

Key differences include:

• Wet fire mains: Pipelines permanently filled with water under pressure, ready for immediate use but requiring frost protection and drinking water protection.
• Wet/dry fire mains: Automatically flooded via remote-controlled valves only in the event of fire, minimizing frost and water stagnation risks.
• Dry risers / dry pipelines: Exclusively charged with water by the fire brigade via dedicated inlet fittings during an incident (tested for tightness and clear flow).
• Central technology: Testing backflow preventers, break tanks, and pressure boosting systems ensures hygienic separation from the drinking water network and maintains the required minimum pressure.

Wall Hydrants, Outlets, and Hydraulic Measurements

The core of the on-site inspection is measuring the hydraulic performance of the wall hydrants (Type S for self-help, Type F for fire brigade use). Here, the object-specific target values must be verified against the fire protection concept or hydraulic calculations.

Documentation includes the condition of the hose, reel, shut-off valve, nozzle, and all connection fittings. Using calibrated measuring instruments, qualified technicians determine the dynamic flow pressure and volume flow rate while taking the required simultaneity (simultaneous extraction at multiple hydrants) into account.

Defects, Logbook, and Restoring Operational Readiness

Any defects identified during the test must be precisely documented, categorized, and assigned clear remediation deadlines. Our template allows you to attach photos directly to the defect descriptions and assign responsibilities for repairs.

Once defects are resolved or if the system is fully functional, operational readiness is certified in the logbook. The digital signature of both the inspector and the operator completes the protocol in a legally compliant manner.
