Structure and Purpose of a Voice Alarm System (VAS)
Voice alarm systems (VAS) play a critical role in preventive fire protection. Unlike conventional sirens or bells, they enable targeted, clear voice announcements and behavioral instructions during an evacuation. This significantly reduces the reaction time of people inside the building and prevents panic.
The planning, installation, and maintenance of voice alarm systems are strictly regulated by national and international standards (such as the EN 54 series and local application guidelines like DIN VDE 0833-4 in Germany). A VAS essentially consists of the voice alarm control and indicating equipment (VACIE), the transmission paths (speaker lines), certified loudspeakers, and interfaces to other safety systems, primarily the fire alarm system (FAS).
